THE FATE OF DEATH

THE BOOK

As part of my final year of my Bachelor of Creative Media course, I chose to take a short story I had written and design minimalistic illustrations to fully bring the words to life. The unique silhouetted style allows for the most vital details to shine through, capturing the nostalgia of fairytales and giving adult audiences the full visual experience of this dark journey.

THE PLOT

The story is about a girl who delves into forces she does not fully understand in order to stop her destined demise, summoning a darkened spirit whose past will only bring destruction and death.

FACTS ABOUT THE STORY

The short story is set around the early 1900s (or late 1800s) in a hidden fantasy world. It is just over 4,500 words in total, written from the perceptive of the main character recalling the events. The story relates to a novel I am slowly in the process of writing, but works perfectly well as a stand alone story.

An ongoing aspect of my design was incorporating the visual look of the seasons into different parts of the story. It begins in a summery springtime, giving a sense of hope, possibility and rebirth. Then the story moves to autumn, as things begin to fall apart and the main conflict of the story arrises. The story ends in the cold, dead winter, with a sense of loss and a chilling future ahead.
